Community

Mythic Fire feels that fire dancing is not just a cool way to show off, or even just a fun thing to do with yourself — it also makes you part of a whole community of fire people throughout the Bay Area and the world. In our brief time on the San Francisco fire scene, we’ve been privileged to meet many wonderful and interesting folks who all help enrich the community and the entire city. We’re firmly committed to giving back — or paying forward — some of the great knowledge and energy we’ve received from you all.

Fire and poi spinning are friendly arts — there are thriving online communities of spinners and fire artists, and most of us seem to be so enthusiastic that we can’t not walk up and say hello to another spinner in a park, an alley, or an airport waiting lounge. Chance meetings like these are a great time to trade enthusiasm, stories, and practice tips. Our own Whirlygig practice sessions are open to anyone who plays with fire or poi, or wants to learn or even just watch.

Some other great online fire and spinning resources:

• Home of Poi, in New Zealand, is the granddaddy of all poi sites. These guys not only make and sell most of the practice poi and a lot of the fire gear in existence, they’ve also got tutorials, giant message boards, and a ton of other resources for firefolk and spinners. If you want more information, they’re the place to start.
• Adam Rice has articles on making fire gear, and also sells his work to the hungry masses.
• Bearclaw Manufacturing is a maker of high-quality gear, and includes some unusual and exciting items that can’t be found elsewhere.
• Brian Dubé, Inc. (generally just called “Dubé) and Renegade Juggling are the premier suppliers of Kevlar wicking for fire performers. (We recommend the Renegade 1/8” Kevlar over Dubé’s 1/16” stuff, but it’s really a matter of personal preference.)
