Whirlygig

Updated: 17 Sep/12:01 Whirlygig Status
Whirlygig starts at 7:00 p.m. tonight, at the new location in Lower Haight.

Every Sunday night, Mythic Fire hosts a practice session for spinners, twirlers, jugglers, fire performers, drummers, and whoever else wants to show up. These “Whirlygig” sessions are free and open to the public. Sessions happen in the backyard of a house in the Lower Haight, near the intersection of Haight and Divisadero.

Please Note: Whirlygig currently starts at 7:00 p.m., and that starting time will continue until Daylight Savings Time ends, at the end of October. Email us for more information, directions, and so on.

It doesn’t matter if you spin poi, staff, or some bizarre device you just cooked up last week, if you use fire, glowsticks, or something that emits no light at all. It doesn’t matter if you’re a complete novice or you’ve been doing this for years. It doesn’t even matter if you’re a member of some whole other fire troupe. We’re open to all levels, all styles, and all kinds of toys — the whole point of Whirlygig is to have fun and to promote cross-fertilization and community. This is an open event for everyone.

We generally have a little bit of spare practice gear, mostly poi, around that we can lend to beginners, and we’re happy to teach the basics to the best of our ability. If you’re planning to burn, please bring some fuel or a donation to help cover the costs of it. We can supply water, but Gatorade, energy drinks, and so forth, are always a good idea. (There are late-night stores within a block of practice, so you can always get some when you arrive.) Donations of any of the above are always appreciated — many of us are un- or under-employed these days, sadly.

Whirlygig also has a mailing list associated with it. This is partly to coordinate the practice sessions, but also serves as a general chat-and-discussion board for local firefolk and spinners. You can subscribe to (and unsubscribe from) the list using the form below.
